HOTEL NOOTEBOOM

Documentary film by Heinz Peter Schwerfel, 2004
subtitles in Italian, length 96 minutes

“A journey through images in the world of words”, to discover Cees Nooteboom’s life and works. The German director Heinz Peter Schwerfel meets the Dutch writer, who naturally and simply speaks about himself, about his journeys, about the complex relation that ties him to his native country and to the several European cities where he travelled and lived. Not only this: Nooteboom explains what writing means to him, he speaks about his literary influences: one of them is the Russian writer Vladimir Nabokov. This documentary film is enriched with the contribution of friends and other intellectuals, who show us the portrait of a sensitive, introspective man, fond of solitude and reflection. Intimate, simple, but very evocative images are the background for readings and interviews: shelves full of books, streets and roads in Amsterdam, Berlin, Lisbon… and no soundtrack: only the noise and sounds caught by chance during the recording.
