PRESENTATION OF THE CITY SEAL TO JAVIER CERCAS

In an official ceremony, the Mayor of the City of Pordenone, Claudio Pedrotti, will bestow the Freedom of the City upon Javier Cercas.

This prestigious honour is conferred on “persons recognized for their extraordinary social, cultural and political achievements”.
Internationally-acclaimed personages awarded the Freedom of the City during previous Dedica festivals include Amin Maalouf, Vassilis Vassilikos, Assja Djebar, Paco Ignacio Taibo II, Anita Desai, Amos Oz, Nadine Gordimer, Paul Auster, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Cees Nooteboom and Wole Soyinka.

After the ceremony, prizes will be awarded to the winners of the “Parole e immagini per Javier Cercas” project, which was open to secondary school students.

The City Seal
comprises a large door, shown beneath two golden crowns, opening onto the Noncello river. The door represents the importance of the city as a river port enjoying direct communication and commerce with nearby Venice and the Adriatic sea; the two golden crowns symbolized the extent of the judicial power vested in the city.
Today, the door opening onto the river is the symbol of a city that is open to new experiences and cultural exchanges, in a climate of respect, tolerance and curiosity that encourages each of its citizens to take an active part in the life of the city.
