Conversation with Hisham Matar and Gianluca Buttolo
conducted by Claudio Cattaruzza
Meetings are frequently the result of fortuitous coincidences, and this was the case for Hisham and Gianluca. A chance meeting led to the conception and the subsequent creation of a story made from words and images: Il Libro di Dot, a fascinating children’s tale which also has deep significance for adult readers.
Gianluca Buttolo
Gianluca Buttolo was born in Udine in 1968, and began his career as an illustrator in 2003 after working for many years in an architectural studio. He collaborates with a number of Italian and international newspapers and periodicals, and also works as a theatrical designer.
His publications include La scelta (2015), a graphic novel which centres on the figure of attorney Giorgio Ambrosoli, Il libro di Dot (2017), a contemporary fable based on the work of author Hisham Matar, and Michelangelo. Il conflitto della Sistina (2019).
At the end of this meeting, to be held in the cloisters of the Convento San Francesco, an exhibition of the works of Gianluca Buttolo will be inaugurated: Di storie e di matite.
