THE FOURTH WALL

PEACE IN THE THEATRE, WAR ALL AROUND
Mise en espace (semi-staged spatial arrangement) of Sorj Chalandon’s novel
by Gabriele Vacis
sound effects by Roberto Tarasco
with Gabriele Vacis, Lorenzo Tombesi, Edoardo Roti, Letizia Russo

In Greece, during the period of the tragic dramatists, in the fifth century BC, they were inventing democracy through Theatre. Sorj Chalandon, with the characters of The Fourth Wall breathes new breath of life into the classics by taking Antigone through the war-torn streets of Beirut in the early 1980s. Democracy, as the Ancient Greeks knew, is a delicate plant, not something that needs to be nurtured, like peace.
How to devise an effective arms reduction plan? How to let go of the idea of justice superimposed on revenge? We have three possibilities: talking, praying, singing…
