Was born in Cartagena, Spain in 1951.
He was a war correspondent for newspapers, radio and television until 1994, when he decided to devote himself to literature.
A very successful author, his novels have been translated into over 40 languages and have had numerous film adaptations.
In 1992 he received the Goya Prize, followed by, among others, the Jean Monnet Prize for European Literature (1997), the Prix Méditerranée Étranger awarded by the Académie Goncourt (2001), the von Rezzori Prize (2008). In 1998 he was appointed Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of France and since 2003 he has been a member of the Real Academia Española, the highest Spanish institution for language and literature.
