The Author

Sorj Chalandon

He was born in Tunis in 1952. His birth name was Georges, but he later changed it to Sorj, the name his grandmother used to call him. After spending his childhood in Lyon in a troubled family environment, he decided to leave home and move to Paris where, despite countless difficulties, he began to develop his passion for writing.

In 1973, he was hired by the daily newspaper “Libération”, where he held various positions before becoming a reporter, a job that led him to cover numerous international conflicts and some high-profile court cases.

In 1988, he was awarded the prestigious Prix Albert-Londres journalism prize for the quality of his reports on Northern Ireland and the trial of Nazi criminal Klaus Barbie.

In 2007, he left “Libération” and became a lecturer at the Centre for Journalism Training in Paris.

In 2009, he joined the editorial staff of the weekly newspaper «Le Canard enchaîné», beginning a collaboration that continues to this day.

Alongside his career in journalism, in 2005 he made his debut in fiction with Le Petit Bonzi, a novel that was received with interest and acclaim by critics and the public alike. The following year he published Une promesse, a novel for which he received the Médicis Prize.

His literary output includes numerous novels, some of which have been adapted for film, theatre and comics and graphic novels.

His books published in Italy include Il mio traditore (My Traitor), Chiederò perdono ai sogni (I Will Ask Forgiveness of Dreams), La quarta parete (The Fourth Wall), La professione del padre (The Father’s Profession), Il giorno prima (The Day Before), Una gioia feroce (A Ferocious Joy) and La furia (The Fury).

He has received numerous awards for his works published in various languages, including the Grand Prix du Roman de l’Académie Française, the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens, the Tiziano Terzani International Literary Prize, and the Prix Eugène-Dabit du roman populiste.
